FireWise

The IF has been accepted as a FireWise Community. Recent County Fire inspections revealed that we have a very LOW number of properties in the community that meet the California Fire Code for defensible space and home hardening. FireWise endeavors can help move Inverness toward a higher level of these important steps to preserve our homes.

FireWise designation enables us and neighborhood FireWise groups to access grant funds from the new voter-approved Marin Fire Authority to help in our efforts.

Please visit FireSafeMarin.org to learn virtually everything you need to know about home hardening and creating defensible space. You’ll find links to seminars, YouTube videos, and lists of other resources. Marin Master Gardeners will even visit homes to help with difficult garden decisions.

We all want to think about our vents, ember access under decks and debris between deck boards and siding as well as screening our gutters, to list a few things that need to be on our summer tasks. All of these steps will limit the ability of embers that travel long distances from igniting flammable materials close to our homes.

There will be more inspections later this year, so it would be great if more homes passed this year than last! If you are ready to rally the troops in your neighborhood, give us a holler.

We’ll be working with the Disaster Council’s Liaisons to get the word out, too. New liaisons are busy being trained, learning about the radios, etc. so we are hoping that we’ll see many people willing to get to work. When you want to go on the defensive to protect your home, you need to realize that having your neighbors’ properties compliant will help you!
